Project Stepping Stone of Muncie, Indiana, Inc. (PSS) is an outreach program sponsored by Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and Lutheran Church of the Cross in Muncie, IN. PSS is incorporated in the State of Indiana as a non-profit organization to assist with temporary furnished housing for families in immediate need in the Muncie community. The stated mission of PSS is to provide housing, rent and utilities free, to families for a period of three to four months until they are able to recoup their resources and find more permanent housing. PSS also may assist families with food and clothing directly or through other agencies.
Project Stepping Stone was organized by Rev. Paulete Stahlke 1989 by opening one house and in 1992 a second house was added. Currently there are three houses in Muncie made available to those in need of temporary housing. The program is managed by all volunteers who make up a governing board. Each house has a team of volunteers who assist each family and oversee the house.
Participants are accepted into the program only by referrals from social service agencies and churches. These include Bridges, The Red Cross, The Salvation Army, Open Door, A Better Way and Christian Ministries of Delaware County. Typically, these are families who have lost their homes due to disaster and those who have lost jobs but have a reasonable possibility of obtaining new work. The program was initially funded by The Lilly Endowment Fund. Currently PSS is supported by regular grants from Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and Lutheran Church of the Cross, a grant provided by the State of Indiana (IFSSA), grants from other philanthropic organizations, the Blanket Cupboard, and personal gifts from many individuals. Financial gifts are continually needed for the rent and utility costs of the houses. Further funding would allow PSS to expand the program by obtaining additional houses. Since each house is furnished, contributions of furniture, linens, and kitchen items are also accepted as the need arises.
